Backsplash Refresh

When we remodeled our kitchen several years ago, we chose a large light grey subway tile as our backsplash. At the time, a light grey grout color seemed like a good idea. It didn't take long for me to regret this grout color choice. It wasn't until we renovated a space for my parents that I realized I HAD to change it. We used the same subway tile for their backsplash - only with a dark grey grout. I loved it!

Changing to a darker grout was the refresh my backsplash needed.

I loved it!

After careful research and begging (my husband wasn't really keen on the idea) I ordered a grout pen in dark grey (they come in several different colors and tip sizes) and prayed for the best.

  • Clean your surface well.
  • Shake the grout pen and tap the tip on a paper plate or something so that the paint fills the tip of the pen.
  • Carefully use the marker to fill in the grout lines of the backsplash.
  • Don't worry too much if you get it outside the lines. You can go back later and clean it up. *Wait at least 20-30 minutes before you take a damp cloth and wipe the area to remove any marks outside the lines.
Here is the before picture. The grout lines were non-existent from a distance.
Better with the darker grout! Plus that little boy with the ice cream cone is pretty dang cute.

Take a step back and enjoy the results!

Difficulty level: Easy

Time Investment: *depends on how much grout you have to color. This was my kitchen backsplash and took me 2 days. This included cleaning and drying time. I could have done it in one afternoon but as usual I was multi-tasking.

Cost: $18 (I used 2 pens)
